Word # 1

Penetrate (verb)

Definition: to move into or through something


Sentence: 1. Amazingly, the bullet did not penetrate his brain. 2. Bullets can penetrate some metals. 3. The company has been successful in penetrating overseas markets this year. 4. In a normal winter, the frost penetrates deeply enough to kill off insect eggs in the soil.


Word # 2

Mutate (verb)

Definition: to change from one thing or type of thing into another / to develop new physical characteristics because of a permanent change in the genes. These changes can happen naturally or can be produced by the use of chemicals or radiation

Sentence: 1. Jon has mutated from an awkward teenager into a sophisticated young man. 2. These bacteria have mutated into forms that are resistant to certain drugs. 3. When bitten by a radioactive spider, Peter Parker's DNA mutated and gave him super powers.


Word # 3

Exodus (noun)

Definition: the movement of a lot of people from a place / a journey by a large group to escape from a hostile environment

Sentence: 1. A great war in Middle East can bring about such exodus of population from east to west. 2. There has been a mass exodus of workers from the villages to the towns. 3. Once the fire alarm sounded, students made a mass exodus from the school building.


Word # 4

Allegory (noun)

Definition: a story, play, poem, picture or other work in which the characters and events represent particular qualities or ideas, related to morals, religion or politics / a visible symbol representing an abstract idea

Sentence: 1. The play can be read as allegory. 2. Saint Augustine's 'City of God' is an allegory of the triumph of Good over Evil.


Word # 5

Enmity (noun)

Definition: hostility / ill will / a feeling of hate / the feeling of a hostile person

Sentence: 1. She denied any personal enmity towards him. 2. People being killed have no personal enmity with their killers. 3. Despite a long, close, and tense match, the defeated player felt no enmity toward the new champion.
