Word # 1

Apprentice (noun)

Definition: trainee / learner / beginner / someone who has agreed to work for a skilled person for a particular period of time and often for low payment, in order to learn that person's skills


Sentence: 1. The carpenter scolded his apprentice for doing a poor job. 2. Most of the work was done by apprentices. 3. To become a clock-maker, you must first work and gain experience as an apprentice. 


Word # 2

Advent (noun)

Definition: arrival / start / beginning / arrival that has been awaited / the arrival of an event, invention or person

Sentence: 1. Before the advent of the web it was hard to attain information about complicated subjects. 2. Life in Britain was transformed by the advent of the steam engine.3. The advent of spring is particularly welcome after a long, harsh winter. 4. The advent of New Year makes everyone busy.



Word # 3

Shoddy (adjective)

Definition: cheap / badly and carelessly made, using low quality materials

Sentence: 1. Shoddy goods 2. The building collapsed due to shoddy construction.


Word # 4

Indispensable (adjective)

Definition: essential / Vital / crucial / important / something or someone that is indispensable is so good or important that you could not manage without them

Sentence: 1. This book is an indispensable resource for researchers. 2. Evidence is indispensable to solve the crime scene. 3. The company considered their popular president indispensable. 4. A supply of food is an indispensable necessity to survival.


Word # 5

Susceptible (adjective)

Definition: vulnerable / at risk / easily influenced or harmed by something / describes someone who is easily emotionally influenced

Sentence: 1. Tropical fish are particularly susceptible to illness or death when living in water that is too cold. 2. He was not susceptible to rumors and legends; he was only interested in facts. 3. I was susceptible to her charms. 4. They are susceptible to physical and electrical damage due to mishandling and power surges.
