Lesson No. 10

 


Word # 1

Naught (noun)

Definition: a quantity of no importance / complete failure / nothing / worthless

Sentence: 1. All our efforts were for naught. 2.  This is no longer a math question so all the work of answering it is for naught!
 3. Steven tried his hardest, but it was all for naught, as Tyler won the race in the end. 


Word # 2

Irrational (adjective)

Definition: illogical / unreasonable / not using reason or clear thinking

Sentence: 1. Even the most logical thinkers among us can be completely irrational sometimes. 2. It's totally irrational, but I'm frightened of mice. 3. His parents were worried by his increasingly irrational behaviour.


Word # 3

Defy (verb)

Definition: to refuse to obey a person, decision, law, situation / resist or confront with resistance

Sentence: 1. I would not defy my fathers orders. 2. Her appearance seemed to defy description. 3. A few workers have defied the majority decision and gone into work despite the strike. 4. A forest fire raging in the south of France is defying all attempts to control it.



Word # 4

Fright (noun)

Definition: fear / terror / anxiety / an emotion experienced in anticipation of some specific pain or danger / the feeling of fear, especially if felt suddenly, or an experience of fear which happens suddenly

Sentence: 1. The dragon soon had the hapless knights running away in fright. 2. I lay in bed shaking with fright. 

 

 

Word # 5

Fiery (adjective)

Definition: burning / scorching / bright red, like fire / like or suggestive of fire / blistering

Sentence: 1. She had a fiery look in her eyes. 2. The bomb created a fiery explosion. 3. A fiery sky/sunset
