Word # 1

Desolate (adjective)

Definition: deserted / isolated / describes a place that is empty and not attractive, with no people or nothing pleasant in it


Sentence: 1. The gas station was the only sign of civilization on the desolate stretch of road. 2.  The desert is the most desolate place on earth. 3. When he retired, he moved to the desolate wilderness of northern Alaska. 4. The house stood in a bleak and desolate landscape.


Word # 2

Pensive (adjective)

Definition: thoughtful / meditative / thinking in a quiet way, often with a serious expression on your face / deeply, often wistfully or dreamily thoughtful

Sentence: 1. After seeing his old girlfriend, he just sat there with a pensive look on his face. 2. Edward is pensive when he reads people's minds. 3. The young lady sat beneath the old oak tree stuck deep in pensive thought. 4. He wrote a pensive entry in his journal.

Comprehend (verb)

Definition: to understand something completely / know / realize

Sentence: 1. It was difficult to comprehend the lesson because our teacher used many long and unfamiliar words. 2. I fail to comprehend their attitude.3. He doesn't seem to comprehend the scale of the problem.


Word # 4

Qualm (noun)

Definition: concern / an uncomfortable feeling of doubt about whether you are doing the right thing / uneasiness about the fitness of an action

Sentence: 1. Ahmed had no qualms about taking the new job. 2. Mary had qualms about going out without her parents' permission. 3. After hiding Johnny's wallet as an April fool's joke, I began to have qualms. What if she taught someone stole it and will call the police?




Word # 5

Imperative (adjective)

Definition: very important / vital / crucial / essential / extremely important or urgent; needing to be done or given attention immediately

Sentence: 1. It is imperative that you do your homework in order to get a good grade on your report card. 2. It's imperative to act now before the problem gets really serious.
