Word # 1

Premonition (noun)

Definition: idea / an early warning about a future event / a feeling that something, especially something unpleasant, is going to happen


Sentence: 1. Ben had a premonition (idea) that Hannah was going to cancel their date. 2.  He had a premonition that his plane would crash, so he took the train. 3. She had a sudden premonition of what the future might bring.


Word # 2

Coveted (adjective)

Definition: popular / in demand / greatly desired

Sentence: 1. The Super Bowl trophy is the most coveted trophy in football. 2. She took the coveted hat. 3. You shall not covet your neighbors belongings.


Word # 3

Quell (verb)

Definition: suppress, put down, crush completely / to stop something, especially by using force

Sentence: 1. The police were called out to quell the riot. 2. The administrator had been called in to quell a minor disturbance.  3. This latest setback will have done nothing to quell the growing doubts about the future of the club.



Word # 4

Volatile (adjective)

Definition: unstable / unpredictable / likely to change suddenly and unexpectedly or suddenly become violent or angry

Sentence: 1. The price of gasoline is very volatile since it changes a lot. 2. The situation was made more volatile by the fact that people had been drinking a lot of alcohol. 3. He had a rather volatile temper and can't have been easy to live with.

 

 

Word # 5

Dreadful (adjective)

Definition: terrible / awful / horrible / frightful / causing fear or dread or terror / very bad, of very low quality, or shocking and very sad

Sentence: 1. The weather today was dreadful. 2. The food was bad and the service was dreadful. 3. The news report was so dreadful that I just had to switch it off.
