Word # 1

Heave (verb)

Definition: lift or elevate / the act of lifting something with great effort / to move something heavy using a lot of effort / To throw something forcefully, especially something large and heavy / If something heaves, it makes one or more large movements up and down


Sentence: 1. He heaved the bag onto his shoulder. 2. He cleared a space, heaving boxes out of the way. 3. She picked up a great book and heaved it at him. 4. As the wind increased, the deck of the ship began to heave beneath his feet.


Word # 2

Apparent (adjective)

Definition: obvious / clear / able to be seen or understood

Sentence: 1. Her unhappiness was apparent to everyone. 2. I was on the metro this morning when for no apparent reason the man opposite suddenly screamed. 3. The teacher said to the student, "Given the expression on your face, it is apparent that you've forgotten your homework." 4. The news report stated that he died of an apparent heart attack.


Word # 3

Peasant (noun)

Definition: farmer / a person, who owns or rents a small piece of land and grows crops, keeps animals, etc.

Sentence: 1. Most of the produce sold in the market is grown by peasant farmers. 2. Tons of internationally donated food was distributed to the starving peasants.


Word # 4

Paranoid (adjective)

Definition: feeling extremely nervous and worried because you believe that other people do not like you or are trying to harm you

Sentence: 1. He started feeling paranoid and was convinced his boss was going to fire him. 2 My friend is paranoid. He's always checking behind his shoulder to see if anyone's watching him. 3. Stop being paranoid!


Word # 5

Harlot (noun)

Definition: a prostitute (= woman who has sex for money) / hooker / whore

Sentence: 1. A harlot assassinated his neighbor who had scolded her for her suspicious activities.
