Word # 1

Proclaim (verb)

Definition: announce / to declare formally / to announce something publicly or officially, especially something positive


Sentence: 1. All the countries have proclaimed their loyalty to the alliance. 2. The defendants are going to proclaim their innocence.  3. I proclaim the good news to all people. 4. He is going to proclaim his love for her in front of the whole world. 5. Republican party members were confidently proclaiming victory even as the first few votes came in.



Word # 2

Diminish (verb)

Definition: belittle / to reduce or be reduced in size or importance / lessen the authority, dignity, or reputation of / decrease in size, extent, or range

Sentence: 1. Your ability to benefit from your studies is diminished if you ask others to do your assignments for you.  2. These memories will not be diminished by time. 3. What he did has seriously diminished him in many people's eyes. 4. I don't want to diminish her achievements, but she did have a lot of help. 


Word # 3

Arrogant (adjective)

Definition: unpleasantly proud and behaving as if you are more important than, or know more than, other people / self-important

Sentence: 1. I found him arrogant and rude. 2. He was so arrogant that he thought he could feed all the people by his money. 3. An arrogant official 4. Arrogant claims



Word # 4

Pry (verb)

Definition: be nosy / to try to find out private facts about a person / ask questions / make an uninvited or presumptuous inquiry / search or inquire in an annoying way

Sentence: 1. Don’t pry into my personal life. 2. As a reporter, I was paid to pry into other people's lives. 3. I hope you don't think I'm prying, but has your boyfriend ever lived with anyone before?



Word # 5

Hunch (noun)

Definition: an idea which is based on feeling and for which there is no proof

Sentence: 1. I had a hunch that you'd be here. 2. Sometimes you have to be prepared to act on/follow a hunch.
