Word # 1

Drifter (noun)

Definition: a person who is continually moving from place to place, without any fixed home or job / someone who moves from one place to another or from one job to another without any purpose / one that travels or moves about aimlessly

       
Sentence: 1. He was a drifter who traveled from state to state. 2. The drifter just packed up and moved on to the next dead-end job. 3. Mostly drifters live from hand to mouth with out saving a penny. 4. A drifter was sentenced to life in the Georgia state penitentiary after he confessed to abducting and killing a female hiker.



Word # 2

Esoteric (adjective)

Definition: very unusual; understood or liked by only a small number of people, especially those with special knowledge / understood by or meant for only the select few who have special knowledge or interest / something that is supposed to be understood by only a select few with the special knowledge

 

Sentence: 1. He has an esoteric collection of old books. 2. Esoteric taste / subject / purpose / philosophical debate / pursuits / terminology / doctrines 3. Metaphysics is such an esoteric subject that most people are content to leave it to the philosophers. 4. The astronomers spent the night debating esoteric theories about Mars.


Word # 3

Scoff (verb / noun)

Definition: to laugh and speak about a person or idea in a way which shows that you think they are stupid or silly / speak to someone or about something in a scornfully derisive or mocking way

 

Sentence: 1. If you can't do any better, don't scoff. 2. Their efforts toward a peaceful settlement are not to be scoffed at. 3. The critics scoffed at his paintings. 4. Years ago people would have scoffed at the idea that cars would be built by robots. 5. Despite the scoffs of her colleagues, the experiment was completely successful.


Word # 4

Scoundrel (noun)

Definition: a person, especially a man, who treats other people very badly and has no moral principles / a dishonest or unscrupulous person / an unprincipled, dishonorable person; villain


Sentence: 1. For every scoundrel there is a hero. 2. The scoundrel who killed her made good his escape eight full hours before the police had any knowledge of the crime. 3. Some scoundrel placed a telegraph pole across the track, which caused the disaster. 4. He was such a scoundrel, always stealing others’ things.


Word # 5

Cuddle (verb / noun)

Definition: to put your arms around someone and hold them in a loving way, or (of two people) to hold each other close to show love or for comfort / hold close in one’s arms as a way of showing love or affection / hug or embrace someone gently

Sentence: 1. She cuddled the baby and eventually it stopped crying. 2.    Chechen fathers do not cuddle or play with their sons for fear of making them weak. 3. They were cuddling each other in the back seat. 4. Come here and give me a cuddle.
