Lesson No. 32



Word # 1

Inquisitive (adjective)

Definition: wanting to discover as much as you can about things, sometimes in a way that annoys people / having or showing an interest in learning things; curious / excessively curious, esp. about the affairs of others; prying

                                                          
Sentence: 1. An inquisitive child 2. His poems reveal an intensely inquisitive mind 3. I didn’t like to seem inquisitive. 4. She could see inquisitive faces looking out from the windows next door. 5. The mouse looked around the room inquisitively (adverb).



Word # 2

Adonis (noun)

Definition: a very beautiful or sexually attractive young man / an extremely handsome young man

 

Sentence: 1. Not all of us have the body of an Adonis. 2. She walked in on the arm of some blond Adonis. 3. The girls thought that he was so handsome that he resembled a modern day Adonis. 4.  Only an Adonis like me can mesmerize this beautiful lady



Word # 3

Aggravate (verb)

Definition: to make a bad situation worse / make (a problem, injury, or offence) worse or more serious / to make a disease worse

 

Sentence: 1. Attempts to restrict parking in the city centre have further aggravated the problem of traffic congestion. 2. Military action would only aggravate the situation.  3. Stress can aggravate the problem.  4. She aggravated an old knee injury. 5. A headache can be aggravated by too much exercise.


Word # 4

Loony (adjective / noun)

Definition: silly or stupid / a mad or silly person / crazy, foolish

 

Sentence: 1. He had lots of loony ideas about education. 2. She was working with a bunch of loonies.  3. Every family includes someone who's a little loony.


Word # 5

Futile (adjective)

Definition: incapable of producing any useful result; pointless / (of actions) having no effect or achieving nothing; unsuccessful 


Sentence: 1. A futile attempt to keep fans from mounting the stage 2. It's quite futile trying to reason with him - he just won't listen. 3. All my attempts to cheer her up proved futile. 4. Attempts to get supplies to the region are futile because troops will not allow the aid convoy to enter the city.
