Lesson No. 27



Word # 1

Mob (noun)
Definition: a large angry crowd / a large angry crowd, especially one which could easily become violent / a large crowd of people, especially one that is disorderly and intent on causing trouble or violence / the Mafia or a similar criminal organization

Sentence: 1. Both brothers were attacked by a mob of at least 50. 2. The angry mob outside the jail was/were ready to riot. 3. Fifty people were killed in three days of mob violence. 4. He is a New York mob leader.


Word # 2

Flog (verb)

Definition: to beat or strike with a rod or whip / to beat someone very hard with a whip or a stick, as a punishment 

 

Sentence: 1. Soldiers used to be flogged for disobedience. 2. The men had been flogged and branded on the forehead. 3. Savages appeared flogging a 16-year-old girl in Jungle.


Word # 3

Ravage (verb)

Definition: to cause great damage to something / cause severe and extensive damage to something

 

Sentence: 1. The floods have ravaged canals and pipes. 2. The area has been ravaged by drought/war. 3. The hurricane ravaged southern Florida. 4. Uncontrolled diabetes can ravage your heart, kidneys, brain, and pancreas.


Word # 4

Humbug (noun)

Definition: dishonest talk, writing or behaviour that is intended to deceive people / deceptive or false talk or behaviour / communication (written or spoken) intended to deceive

 

Sentence: 1. His comments are sheer humbug. 2. Mary had always thought the whole thing was simply a humbug. 3. The tons of sentiment I have wasted on that unprincipled humbug in my ignorance!


Word # 5

Utter (verb)

Definition: to say something or to make a sound with your voice / express audibly / say (something) aloud

 

Sentence: 1. She sat through the whole meeting without uttering a word. 2. He uttered strange sound that nobody could understand. 3. I watched her face tighten in rage as she started to utter each word with unguarded contempt.
