Lesson No. 25



Word # 1

Lunatic (noun)
Definition: mad man / maniac / insane person / someone who behaves in a silly or dangerous way / a person who is mentally ill
 
Sentence: 1. He drives like a lunatic. 2. You would have to be a lunatic to leave the doors of you house unlocked in this day and age! 3. Wow, that guy is such a lunatic; I heard he broke his chair after he heard he failed his test.



Word # 2

Loner (noun)

Definition: a person who avoids the company or assistance of others / person or animal that prefers to be alone / a person who likes to do things on their own without other people

 

Sentence: 1. He was always a bit of a loner at school. 2. He was a loner and even after he married and had three children, felt somehow disconnected from them. 3. Unless you are a real loner, you need relationships.


Word # 3

Scarecrow (noun)

Definition: a model of a person dressed in old clothes and put in a field of growing crops to frighten birds away / bird-scarer / an effigy in the shape of a man to frighten birds away from fields or corps

 

Sentence: 1. For large domestic gardens and commercial premises, the Electronic Scarecrow may be the answer. 2. A neighbor suggests that I might put up a scarecrow near the vines, which would keep the birds away. 3. Anything set up to frighten crows or other birds from cornfields; hence, anything terrifying without danger. A scarecrow set to frighten fools away.



Word # 4

Inception (noun)

Definition: the establishment or starting point of an institution or activity / the beginning of an organization or official activity / an event that is a beginning; a first part or stage of subsequent events

 

Sentence: 1. Since its inception in 1968, the company has been at the forefront of computer development. 2. She has been on the board since its inception two years ago. 3. The fund has produced an average annual return of 16 per cent since its inception in 2001. 4. Australian soccer has been waiting five years since the inception of the A- League for a grand final between its two biggest clubs from the nation



Word # 5

Bolt-hole (noun)

Definition: a place where you can hide, especially to escape from other people / a place where a person can escape and hide 

 

Sentence: 1. He thought of Alaska as a possible bolt-hole. 2. They considered the inn a bolt-hole in times of stress.
