Lesson No. 33



Word # 1

Prolix (adjective)

Definition: using too many words and therefore boring or difficult to read or listen / (of speech or writing) using or containing too many words; tediously lengthy / (of a person) given to speaking or writing at great or tedious length. 

                                                          
Sentence: 1. The speech was unnecessarily prolix. 2. The author's prolix style has done nothing to encourage sales of the book. 3. A prolix lecturer always telling you more than you want to know 4. I became accustomed to falling asleep during my history teacher's prolix lectures. 5. The listeners in the meeting began to feel bored because of the president's prolix explanation of the company policy.


Word # 2

Vicious (adjective)

Definition: describes people or actions that show an intention or wish to hurt someone or something very badly / deliberately cruel or violent / having the nature or quality of vice or immorality / describes an object, condition or remark that causes great physical or emotional pain

 

Sentence: 1. A vicious dog / deception / lie / rumour / accusation / wind / attack / headache / criminal. 2. I know you're upset with her, but there's no need to be vicious. 3. The police said that this was one of the most vicious attacks they'd ever seen. 4.  He gave her a vicious look.


Word # 3

Stirring (adjective)

Definition: causing excitement or strong emotion / A stirring speech or song is one which produces strong positive emotions / rousing, exciting, lively, or thrilling

 

Sentence: 1. Stirring songs 2. A stirring and thriving politician 3. I would not forget his stirring speech.


Word # 4

Taint (verb / noun)

Definition: to spoil something, especially food or blood, by adding a harmful substance, or to spoil people's opinion of someone / to infect, contaminate, corrupt, or spoil (something) / a trace of something bad, offensive, or harmful

 

Sentence: 1. His reputation was permanently tainted by the financial scandal. 2. The air was tainted by fumes from the cars. 3. Baseball owners worry that steroid use could taint the reputation of the sport. 4. The enquiry cleared him of any taint of suspicion/dishonesty.


Word # 5

Sporadic (adjective)

Definition: happening sometimes; not regular or continuous / occurring at irregular intervals or only in a few places; scattered or isolated / occurring occasionally, singly, or in irregular or random instances


Sentence: 1. Sporadic gunfire / electricity supply / protests. 2. Sporadic cases of the disease were reported. 3. Sporadic loud noises kept startling (surprising and sometimes worrying) everyone. 4. More than 100 people have been killed this year in sporadic outbursts of ethnic violence.
