Lesson No. 45



Word # 1

Instigate (verb)

Definition: bring about or initiate (an action or event) / to urge, provoke, or incite to some action or course / to cause an event or situation to happen by making a set of actions or a formal process begin / provoke, stir up, induce, stimulate, encourage, initiate or start

       
Sentence: 1. Television also has the power to instigate trends. 2. There has been an increase in the amount of violence instigated by gangs. 3. The government has instigated an investigation into the cause of the accident. 4. Ben, with his bloody nose, may look like the victim here, but I think he did a lot to instigate the fist fight. 5. Adam likes to instigate problems with his classmates. 6. The government will instigate new measures to combat terrorism.


Word # 2

Mentor (noun / verb)

Definition: a wise and trusted counselor or teacher / an experienced person in a company or educational institution who trains and counsels new employees or students / as verb => advise or train (someone, especially a younger colleague)

 

Sentence: 1. He needed a mentor to teach him about the world of politics. 2. The Mentor of Alexander the Great was Aristotle. 3. Regular meetings between mentor and trainee help guide young engineers through their early years. 4. He was her friend and mentor until his death. 5. She spent years mentoring to junior employees. 6. The famous professor mentored him during his years in graduate school.


Word # 3

Crutch (noun)

Definition: a support typically fitting under the armpit for use by the disabled in walking / a stick with a piece that fits under the arm, which you lean on for support if you have difficulty in walking because of a foot or leg injury

 

Sentence: 1. Martin broke his leg playing football and has been on crutches for the past six weeks. 2. Much of his childhood was spent on crutches, and yet he learnt to ride a horse and climb hills.  3. She left the stadium on crutches and in tears but was determined she would be ready for the Olympics. 4. The doctor said he expected Brown to be off crutches in two weeks but would continue to wear his walking boot for several weeks after that.


Word # 4

Intimidate (verb)

Definition: to frighten or threaten someone, usually in order to persuade them to do something that you want them to do / frighten someone, especially in order to make them do what one wants / make timid or fearful

Sentence: 1. They were intimidated into accepting a pay cut by the threat of losing their jobs. 2. Her boss intimidates her. 3. An Australian whistleblower says cigarette makers are trying to intimidate him into silence. 4. The company tried to intimidate smaller businesses with the threat of lawsuits. 5. He tried to look tough, hoping he could intimidate his enemy and avoid a fight.


Word # 5

Annihilate (verb)

Definition: to destroy completely so that nothing is left / destroy utterly / total destruction or complete obliteration of an object / to defeat completely

Sentence: 1. The heavy bombing almost annihilated the city. 2. It was decided to conduct a massive bombing campaign to annihilate any enemy troops in the area. 3. The new chemical used by the company was designed to annihilate the insects. 4. The decision to annihilate the entire population of enemy country came directly from the government.  5. Our basketball team annihilated the visiting team. 6. He annihilated his opponent in the last election.
