Swath / Swathe (noun)

Definition: a long strip or large area especially of land / a long broad strip or belt / a varied section or range / a row of cut grain or grass left by a scythe or mowing machine

                                                           

Sentence: 1. Taliban have regained control of swaths of territory in Afghanistan. 2. Huge swathes of rainforest are being cleared for farming and mining. 3. These people represent a broad/wide swathe of public opinion. 4. An aerial view of the countryside shows wide swathes of green. 5. He cut a swath through the field with his scythe.

Decisive (adjective)

Definition: able to make decisions quickly and confidently, or showing this quality / having or showing the ability to make decisions quickly and effectively / strongly affecting how a situation will progress or end / having the power or quality of deciding

 

Sentence: 1. You need to be more decisive. 2. A decisive reply / a decisive role / a decisive victory / battle 3. The archers played a decisive part in the victory. 4. You must be decisive and persistent to succeed in this competitive field. 5.  This is being deemed (considered) the decisive battle of the war.

Definition: always loyal in supporting a person, organization or set of beliefs or opinions / very loyal and committed in attitude

 

Sentence: 1. I am one of his staunchest supporters. 2. She is a staunch advocate of women's rights. 3. North Korea is one of China's staunchest allies. 4. A staunch supporter of the anti-nuclear lobby. 5. A staunch friend / Muslim / ally.

Disrupt (verb)

Definition: to prevent something, especially a system, process or event, from continuing as usual or as expected / interrupt (an event, activity, or process) by causing a disturbance or problem / to cause disorder or turmoil in

 

Sentence: 1. A heavy fall of snow had disrupted the city's transport system. 2. The meeting was disrupted by a group of protesters who shouted and threw fruit at the speaker. 3. The weather disrupted our travel plans. 4. The barking dogs disrupted my sleep.

Sanctuary (noun)

Definition: protection or a safe place, especially for someone or something being chased or hunted / refuge or safety from pursuit, persecution, or other danger / a place where birds or animals can live and be protected, especially from hunters or dangerous conditions / the most holy part of a religious building
